Robertson is nestled away in a valley of abundance, also known as the Valley of Wine and Roses, with sun-drenched mountain vineyards growing select varietals, to plentiful river valley vineyards heavy with fruit. From its humble beginnings in 1852, the town was named after Dr William Roberson, the Scottish Minister, known for its hard-working and welcoming community. With the town a little more grown by 1941, an abandoned stone church made the perfect place to establish Robertson Winery, involving the entire community in order to create wines to share with the world. The Breede River, flowing from the Skurweberg to the sea at Witsands, is joined by hundreds of streams off our surrounding Langeberg mountains along the way. It is from this vital artery that we irrigate our vines.
The wine-making team is guided by Francois Weich and Jacques Roux who both have been with Robertson Winery for over 12 years. Briaan Stipp’s team of viticulturists oversee the 7.5 million vines grown on over 40 farms. For us wine making is a natural process and with the hands-on nature of life in the Robertson Valley, we see it unfold every day. From the soil it is grown in, the water that feeds the vine and the elements each harvest is exposed to, our grapes are the product of many influences before they are even turned into wine. Add the human touch to the process and the real relationship begins.
