When you think Wellington and wine, it’s the Wairarapa that comes to mind, but one of the most exciting new regions in the country is situated just north of the Kapiti Coast. For centuries the Ohau River has been laying down deposits of gravel creating the stony, yet fertile soil needed to produce high quality grapes and award-winning wines. The area was discovered by local viticulturist Kate Gibbs who identified that the river terrace soils were similar to some of the better sites in Marlborough. The climate is also very temperate with the degree growing days approximately halfway between Nelson and Hawke’s Bay and similar to the Wairarapa.
