Though over the recent years, we have seen the popularity of previously overlooked styles, like Prosecco, rise across the global landscape. So how does it all stack up? Tonight, we will blind taste four different champagnes against various styles from Italy, Australia, NZ, and Spain. WINE GEEKS | THE GREAT WHITE WINES OF FRANCE

France is home to some of the most diverse landscapes of the old world, with numerous wine producing regions scattered across it. It is unsurprising to see stylistic diversity of wines to match. To fully appreciate its diversity, we have found a few treats from the more prestigious white wine producing regions of France. We have looked for wine with reasonable bottle age, styles you may not necessarily try every day, and with an average bottle price of $90.

Tonight’s lines up; Marc Bredif Vourvray 2004, Gisselbrecht Gewürztraminer VT 2008, Ferraton les Oliviers Blanc (St Joseph) 2009, Pascal Jolivet Sancerre 2017, Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape 2011, and Joseph Drouhin Puligny Montrachet 2011.

SHADES OF ROSE | SOUTHERN FRANCE

To think, 10 years ago, the word 'rose' in New Zealand meant nothing more than a beautiful flower. Fast forward to 2019 and now it’s as much a 'go to' wine style as any Marlborough Sauvignon, and what’s not to love? The only problem with rose is where to start! We thought, why not run a tasting series that's all about rose? So that's just what we've done. Four nights of five star rose tasting.

Night one, we zoom around Southern France and compare the three appellations of Languedoc, Southern Rhone, and Provence. Night two, we explore roses from Europe, Australia and South America. Night three, we taste roses from New Zealand's 2019 vintage. For our fourth and final night, we focus on methode traditional rose and of course Champagne.

MEET THE WINE MAKER | RICHARD PAINTER, LEFTFIELD

Like all great wine makers, Richard ‘fell’ into a passion for wine. While studying Geography at the University of Otago, Richard worked numerous bar jobs. He soon found a love for wine, and the science behind the wine making process. It was only natural for him to start making wine, and thus, enjoying the best of both worlds.

Working through various wine making regions of NZ and the USA, Richard eventually found his home in the Hawke's Bay, and the bold red wines that the Gimblett Gravels produce. After three years as the assistant wine maker for Vidal, he now leads the team at Te Awa. Join us for a night of great yarns and great wines from Te Awa's Left Field range.

CHAMPAGNE | DAVID VS GOLIATH

They say 'great things come in small packages'. As for Champagne, one can equally say that they also come in large packages, with some houses producing nearly 28 million bottles of deliciousness every year. In recent years, we have seen the rise of Grower Champagnes (the David if you will), producing unique styles reflective of a single village’s terroir. A style which largely contrasts the larger houses, who create blends from multiple cuvees across variable landscapes and with a bucket load more reserve wine to provide some extra depth. Join us and come try and pick out the David of four pairings, or simply be seduced by the charm and finesse that is champagne; Grower or not.
