MACALLAN

The Jacobean Manor depicted in The Macallan’s bottles has been standing since 1700. The Macallan distillery was founded in 1824 by Alexander Reid, a barley farmer and school teacher. Barley had been grown on the land surround The Macallan for centuries. During winter, while there was little barley farming activities, the barley would be fermented and distilled into whisky.

The distillery’s name is likely to have come from the Gaelic words ‘Magh’, meaning fertile land and ‘Ellan’, meaning of St Fillan, who was an Irish-born monk who travelled around Scotland spreading Christianity in the eighth century.
