This Wednesday evening, we had the first Westmere Malt Club upstairs above the Glengarry store. With 12 people joining us on the night, we made our way through a selection of 5 whiskies, as we discussed the various styles and flavours each expression showcased.
We started with the Shackleton's Blended Malt Scotch. Made in homage to Sir Ernest Shackleton, a British Explorer who led three separate expeditions to Antarctica. A hint of smoke, vanilla and toffee apple on the nose leads to dark sugar, dried fruits and tropical hints of pineapple on the palate with a warm finish with a dash of chocolate.
Our next Dram was the Tullibardine Sovereign, a Highland Single Malt matured exclusively in 1st-fill ex-Bourbon Casks. This is a youthful expression, with a rich palate weight, filled with citrus, barley sugar and vanilla.
The third whisky to grace our glasses is a more recent release, from the team at Tamnavulin. Aged initially in American Oak, this expression was finished in sherry casks to add extra character. Again, this is a youthful expression but has rich marzipan characters reminiscent of grandmother's christmas cake, glazed fruits and all!
Our exploration continued to the Isle of Jura, a small island, nestled neatly between Islay and mainland Scotland. This new release is aged in ex-bourbon casks and only lightly peated.
Our night finished with the royal 12-pointed stag of The Dalmore 12, aged for 9 years in ex-Bourbon before being split across ex-bourbon and ex-sherry for a futher 3 years, this malt delivers rich orange peel, breakfast marmalade and spice with a dusting of chocolate.
Thanks to all who joined us on the night, we hope to see you at more whisky nights in the future.
