"Grant Burge wines always surprise and delight me. Craig Stansborough - a humble and modest Aussie bloke from Grant Burge presented us with eight wines on a very cold stormy night. We started with their bubbles made from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay this is a rich offering and a palate cleansing way to start the tasting. We then moved on to six Shiraz which seems overkill... but it wasn't each had their own individual place and reason for being. The Fifth Generation that we opened with was generous and easy and at $14.99 is a steal. The Miamba 2016 was next in the line-up and one of the bargains of the night Barossa was blessed with an almost perfect vintage in 2016 so consequently the Miamba is showing its pedigree it is plush and velvety, plummy and spicy. The third in the first flight was the Filsell 2015 this showed silky tannins and was rich and intense on the palate. The next flight was indeed a treat we did 3 Meshachs in a row the first was the 2009 which was just starting to show some aged characters, it was rich and concentrated with notes of crushed herbs, cedar and spicy plum. The next vintage we tried was the 2011 this was from a cooler vintage and it was more restrained it showed aromas of plum, liquorice and dark chocolate/mocha. The next we tried was the yet to be released 2012 and what a stunner! This wine was ten out of ten for me, it was deep, rich and seamless and long and as it sat in the glass it opened up and got better and better. This wine is the perfect wine to cellar as it will evolve and give even more but good luck keeping it in there! We then finished with the Tawny 10-year-old a lovely sweet treat at the finish. The common thread that I found running through these wines was elegance, finesse and length, not words that we have in the past associated with Australian Shiraz, but like all winemakers around the world Craig is on a quest to produce the finest that he can." - Meredith Parkin
