ZENKURO

We are NZ's first and only brewers of sake. Based in Queenstown, we are producing a Premium (Junmaishu) sake in several styles and strength from sake-specific Japanese rice and water sourced from the Southern Alps. Our sake is best enjoyed chilled and matches well with a variety of foods, even Japanese food! Our Drip Pressed Ginjo won a Gold Medal at the London International Sake Challenge, whilst our cloudy styled Nigori took a silver.

About the Brewer

David Joll

David has had a lifetime of connection with Japan and his love of all things Japanese is reflected in the care he takes making sake. After learning the ropes in Japanese and Canadian sake breweries he has built his own re-creation of a traditional sake 'kura' brewery and practises older 'hands-on' techniques with barely a machine in sight, right here in Queenstown. What started as a conversation on "why isn't anyone brewing sake?" Zenkuro has become a full-time brewery gaining recognition around NZ and overseas, as sake goes through a global boom in consumption and production in places outside Japan.
