Ask the globe’s finest Pinot Noir and Chardonnay producers where they draw their inspiration from, and many will tell you, ‘Burgundy.’ Upon the aptly named ‘golden slopes,’ the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune, Burgundy’s greatest wines are produced. The classification system was originally established by the church, the best grapes defined as from the top of the slopes, with fruit for the villagers predictably down the hill a bit. Inheritance laws have seen the vineyards divided into smaller and smaller family parcels, and within a sea of small producers, it is not uncommon for a single vineyard to have numerous owners.
