TAITTINGER

The much-lauded Taittinger began life as Champagne Fourneaux in 1734. The Fourneaux family were themselves no slouches, acting for a time as advisors to Veuve Clicquot.

During World War I, cavalry officer Pierre Taittinger spent time near Epernay. He subsequently returned to the region in 1932 to buy the Fourneaux holdings and founded the House of Taittinger, in the process buying up large swathes of valuable vineyard at a time when Depression-ravaged land prices were at rock-bottom.

Relinquishing control to international corporate interests in the mid-2000s, the family have subsequently managed to claw their way back into contention. Today, once again in French hands and headed up by Pierre-Emmanuel Taittinger, the business is quartered in Reims, where they reside above their labyrinthine 4th-Century Roman cellars and remain one of the largest vineyard owners in the region.

ANNUAL PRESTIGE CUVÉE CHAMPAGNE TASTING

This is always our most highly anticipated tasting of the year, the chance to dress up and try the world's greatest Champagnes head to head! Prestige or Luxury Cuvee's are the finest blend a House can make, no expense spared with every aspect tended by hand. This year is the most spectacular line-up we've ever presented, with over 15k of wine being opened. We will be looking at four houses, with their Prestige Cuvée directly alongside the Rosé version of the same wine! These are extremely rare bottlings, and significantly more expensive, but they add an extra dimension that has to be tasted to understand. The chance to taste try these alongside each other has never been done before. Hosted by our Champagne expert and Fine Wine Manager Regan McCaffery.

We will be starting with the beautiful 100% Chardonnay Taittinger Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs 2007, and the rarely tasted Taittinger Comtes de Champagne Rosé 2006. Our next step will be the House of Louis Roederer with the wine designed for Tsar Alexander II, Louis Roederer Cristal 2008. We then taste what, for many commentators, is the finest Rosé produced anywhere on earth, the legendary Louis Roederer Cristal Rosé 2008. Moving next to the house of Dom Pérignon, undisputedly the world’s most famous Champagne. We will be tasting the Lenny Kravitz special edition bottling of Dom Pérignon 2008, and the gorgeous Dom Pérignon Rosé 2006. Our final house of the night is the mythical Henri Giraud, from the famed Grand Cru village of Aÿ. We will start with the newly arrived Henri Giraud Argonne 2011, produced in special 100% new oak barrels, with the bottles finished with 24 carat gold. The last wine is something very special indeed, only 328 bottles were produced of the world’s rarest and most expensive Rosé Champagne, the first ever vintage of Henri Giraud Argonne Rosé 2004. With only 6 bottles allocated to NZ, this is truly a once in a lifetime chance to taste this wine.
