QUPE
Qupé was named to honour the Chumash, the indigenous people of California’s Central Coast and Channel Island. In Chumash ‘qupé’ refers to poppies, which was a flower traditionally used for food and medicine. The Californian poppy became the state’s official flower in 1903. The picture on the winery’s label is a stylised interpretation of the poppy, standing with a swirl of stem and leaves.
When Bob Lindquist and his wife Louisa Sawyer Lindquist planted the Sawyer Lindquist Vineyard in 2005, they were committed to sustainable farming practices. Today, Qupé is a certified organic and biodynamic farm. Their vineyard hosts Pinot Noir, Marsanne, Syrah, Grenache, Tempranillo and Albarino grape varieties.
