Grasshopper Rock is a small Central Otago wine producer dedicated exclusively to the production of first class single vineyard pinot noir. The Earnscleugh Road vineyard is planted on a north facing slope, making the site significantly warmer for this far south. Within the site there are three distinct areas: blocks 1 & 2 are hill soils on shattered schist with schist outcrops; blocks 3 & 4 are at the foot of the hill, on loamy sands over schist gravel; blocks 5 & 6 are out from the hill on shallow loamy sand and stony sands on greywacke and schist gravels.
The mix of pinot noir clones and rootstocks planted on the different blocks produce the unique character of our wine. The vines are close planted on 8 ha with production limited to 3500 cases, to maintain quality and an exclusive wine.
Planted in 2003 with the first wine produced in 2006, Grasshopper Rock has already gained a lot of attention from wine reviewers and consumers for its outstanding pinot noir. Grasshopper Rock is a fine example of pinot noir from the Alexandra sub region and has an exciting future.
Grasshopper Rock works with Central Otago's most highly regarded winemakers
Grasshopper Rock has worked with VinPro since its establishment. Initially with Carol Bunn as Chief Winemaker for the 2006 to 2009 vintages and now with Pete Bartle as Chief Winemaker for the 2010 vintage and beyond. Both Pete and Carol believe most of the work is done in the vineyard and the winemaking role is to protect the purity of the fruit grown in the vineyard and to make wine that is true to the site. Wine with poise, texture and balance.
In January 2001 Pete arrived in Central Otago to take on the winemaking role at Olssen’s. The opportunity to work with multiple vineyards drew him to move to Peregrine in October 2004. 2010 has seen him take on the Chief Winemaker role at VinPro where his skills and experience will be a perfect match for the adventures ahead.
