Cullen is a legendary, Margaret River Vineyard. Diana and Kevin Cullen were THE Margaret River pioneers back in the late 60’s. Kevin and Di Cullen planted a trial acre of vines at Wilyabrup in 1966 to form Cullen Wines. The encouraging results of this led to the planting of 18 acres of vines in 1971, including their first Cabernet vines. Daughter Vanya Cullen, took over the winemaking in 1989 and Cullen Wines has evolved into an estate specialising in single vineyard, premium quality wines, with low yields, hand tended, picked and dry farmed for maximum fruit quality, to ensure that the legacy and exacting standards remain uncompromised.Cullen’s vineyards are biodynamically grown with Cullen becoming the first vineyard and winery in Australia to be certified carbon neutral, requiring the calculation of all of the carbon used and carbon dioxide emitted in the winery; the carbon is then offset by the planting of new trees. There is a restaurant onsite which overlooks the historic vineyard and in keeping with the organic philosophy in the vineyard, all dishes are prepared using fresh, organic produce that is sourced from their own garden and select local producers.The wines have received many significant accolades and awards over the years. Vanya Cullen has been winemaking at her family’s Wilyabrup estate since 1983. She was appointed to Chief Winemaker in 1989 and Managing Director in 1999. During that time she has been rigorously experimenting in the vineyard (especially with soil and trellis management) and in the winery all the while looking to give her wines greater complexity. Her palate has been honed by judging throughout Australia and overseas, and by her continuous pursuit of a thorough knowledge of the wines of the world.Over the past decade, Vanya has transformed her family firm from one of Margaret River’s best into one of the country’s premium boutique wineries. Cullen Wines while remaining family owned has since evolved making quality wine from a certified Biodynamic, Carbon Neutral and naturally powered estate. Exemplary viticulture lies at the heart of her success but so, too, do care and thorough attention to detail in the winery.
