YALUMBA

Established in 1849, Yalumba is Australia's most historic family owned winery. It remains fiercely independent and extremely progressive through generational ownership by the Hill-Smith family. Yalumba's longevity and success is a result of patience, collaboration and progressive thinking. There is foresight to embrace the natural terroir, to craft wines with individual character and a sense of purpose, a spirit to reinvest in the land upon which it operates and knowledge to behave as a leader in the industry. It is committed to sharing stories of provenance gathered over 170 years of family winemaking.

The Yalumba journey is synonymous with the development of Barossa Shiraz; from early plantings in the region to the use of the variety in fortified wines in the early 20th century clarets, to the now flagship, The Octavius Shiraz. Sourced from grower sites - tiny ancient and much loved - these grapes come from some of the oldest Shiraz plantings in the world.

Yalumba is also one of the most influential producers of Viognier in the world. Having first planted Viognier in 1980, the winery's viticultural and winemaking experience with this alluring variety continues to evolve. With its own on-site Cooperage, operational since before the turn of the 20th century, Yalumba has the advantage of being able to have full control over the oak used to craft and age its premium wines.

Being in harmony with the natural environment has been at the core of Yalumba since Samuel Smith planted his first vines by moonlight on the same land where Yalumba stands today. Current Chairman and Proprietor Robert Hill-Smith, and his family are committed to preserving not only the landscape in which the business operates but also ensuring the community and its people thrive and prosper for generations to come.

Kevin Glastonbury

Kevin Glastonbury knows the Barossa like the back of his hand. Growing up in the region, KG has more than 30 years of experience in the industry. His knowledge of the Barossa has helped him continue to innovate as Senior Red Winemaker for Yalumba. With such experience working in the Barossa with some of the most famous Shiraz and Grenache vineyards, KG has obtained an understanding of the Barossa and its vineyards that can only come from working in the region for the majority of his winemaking life. KG also looks after the sourcing and purchasing of oak for the crafting of barrels - a proud tradition at Yalumba’s on-site cooperage. KG’s blend of passion and expertise has been recognised with numerous accolades, such as becoming a Len Evan tutorial scholar, respected wine judge, and Winestate ‘Winemaker of the Year’. “After more than 30 years in the industry, listening and learning, I am even more committed and passionate about winemaking, in the knowledge that risk like creativity brings rich rewards.”
