Jackson Estate was one of the founding wineries in Marlborough so it was fantastic to hear the rich and sometimes humorous stories of how they have evolved to what they are today. Matt Paterson-Green took us through the Pinot Noir programme that is is place today, a bold move in Sauvignon Blanc territory. We tasted through three whites-Dry Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay we then moved on to six Pinot Noir, we tasted Homestead 2017 a lovely full fruit Pinot for right now! We then tasted two Vintage Widow Pinots, the 2012 and the 2015-winner of Gold and Trophy at IWSC. The fruit for this wine is from two sites the Somerset and Gum Emperor and this made the last flight particularly interesting. It consisted of 3 of the single vineyard wines, 2 vintages of Somerset 2012 and 2013 and lastly the sturdy and intense 2013 Gum Emperor, it was great to see the sum of parts that make up the stunning Vintage Widow. The best thing about these wines is that they are not prohibitively expensive and there is something in there for everyone.
