We had a sold out room for this stunning tasting of the 2013 single vineyard Barolo and Barabaresco from GAJA, one of the greatest producers in all of Italy. Our Fien Wine manager Regan McCaffery lead us through the history and stories of this mysterious and legendary estate in Piedmonte. After starting with his Sito Moresco blend, the first of the big hitters was his Darmagi Langhe 2013. This wine is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from a top vineyard in the heart of Nebbiolo country, just above the town of Barbaresco itself. The name literally means 'What a Pity', said by his father when he heard he had planted Cabernet on the Site. Next up was his two 2013 Barolo side by side, Conteisa vs Spress. The former impressed with it's elegance, the latter with it's huge tannins and power. After we were treated to some dry aged beef from the 'Well Hung' Butchery in Milford, it was time for the Barbaresco's. Starting with the 2014, then all three of his legendary single vineyard 2013s back to back. Costa Russi, Sori Tildin and Sori San Lorenzo. This is the first time in 20yrs they have been back under the official appellation, now the younger members of the family are in charge. These are also some of the finest examples of Nebbiolo we have ever tasted.
