Vina Salceda was born on the banks of the Ebro in Elciego, Rioja Alavesa, where a group of pioneers reshaped Rioja winemaking more than 150 years ago in pursuit of wines that were livelier, more elegant and built to last. That spirit endures today, balancing deep respect for tradition with a genuinely contemporary outlook.
The region's ties to wine run back to Roman settlers, drawn by its climate and terrain, and fermentation vessels found near Elciego confirm winemaking here since ancient times. By the late fifteenth century the vine had become the region's dominant crop. The vineyards themselves sit in a valley sheltered by the Sierra de Cantabria and Sierra de la Demanda, where Atlantic humidity meets the drier Meseta climate, tempered by the nearby river and mountain air.
Nearby, a nineteenth century bridge across the Ebro, one that survived floods and wartime damage, still stands as a symbol of openness and resilience, echoing Salceda's own outward looking ambition.
