QUINTA DO NOVAL

When it comes to port, the 300-year-old house of Quinta do Noval is pretty much it; i.e. the state of the art. One of the oldest, and arguably the greatest, of all the port houses, Noval produce wines displaying an incredible delicacy and elegance, and they are unique in that their glorious Nacional, along with the Quinta do Noval vintage ports, Quinta do Noval Colheitas and Douro red wines all come from their single vineyard located in Pinhão, at the very heart of the Douro Valley. At the centre of that vineyard lies a tiny, treasured parcel planted with ungrafted vines that are 100% Portuguese rootstock untouched by phylloxera, from which Quinta do Noval make the legendary Nacional, the most famous and desired port in the world. The vineyard is, in its entirety, within the top classification, and planted with the noble grape varieties of the Douro, Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinto Cão, Tinta Barroca, Tinta Francisca and Sousão. A high degree of finesse and elegance characterize Noval’s vintage ports, which are only declared in three or four years per decade, and only when the wines come up to Noval’s exacting standards. Noval’s red wines, too, display enormous charm and accessibility.

WINEMAKER & TECHNICAL DIRECTOR

ANTÓNIO AGRELLOS

A winemaker who once dreamt of becoming an architect, António Agrellos was born in Porto and has lived there ever since. However, architecture ended up taking second place to five generations of a family preoccupation with port winemaking. Acquiring the basics of winemaking and viticultural skills in Bordeaux, António returned to Portugal where he worked with two of Portugal’s greatest ever port masters, Frederico van Zeller and Fernando Nicolau de Almeida. Eventually, he was offered the winemaking role at Quinta do Noval, which at the time had seen off its glory days. When in the 1990s, AXA’s Chrisian Seely took over the company reins, António Agrellos secured the ability to oversee the renewal of the vineyard, reclaiming its reputation as one of the finest vineyards in the Douro. Since becoming the Wine Director, António Agrellos has achieved 100 points at Wine Spectator for Noval’s vintage ports on four separate occasions.
