PHILIPPONNAT

From deep within their 18th-Century cellars, Philipponnat produce distinctive, full-bodied, Pinot Noir-dominated champagne expressions. Included in their estate is the exceptional wall-enclosed Clos des Goisses vineyard, arguably the region’s finest, from where they produce their most powerful champagnes. Always vintaged, very lightly dosed, their richly expressive, highly individual wines are characterized by incredible length and body.

Family control is retained in the form of Charles Philipponnat, who has been running things since 2000. With careful vision, skill and attention to detail, Charles is redefining his family’s champagne house in a steady return to its former glory days.

CHAMPAGNE BLANC DE NOIRS

Many of us know the French term Blanc de Blancs, most commonly used for a Champagne made from 100% Chardonnay. Blanc de Noirs is much less understood, literally it means "white from blacks", white wine from black grapes, in this case generally 100% Pinot Noir. As you would imagine these are generally robust, full flavoured and powerful wines, perfect for drinking in the middle of winter. Our champagne expert Regan McCaffery will lead us through 8 different wines, with the stories behind the houses and these unusual and complex examples. Expand your understanding of what Champagne can be. We will be tasting: Moutard Grande Cuvee, Serge Mathieu Tradition, Drappier Zero Dosage, Philipponnat Blanc de Noirs 2011, Henri Giraud Code Noir, Mumm RSRV 2008, Tarlant La Vigne d'Or 2003, Tarlant La Vigne Royale 2003.
