PERELADA

Castillo Perelada are located neatly enough in the village of Peralada, producing wine from the D.O. of Empordà and the D.O. of Penedès. The Castle of Peralada, in the village of Peralada, was bought by Miguel Mateu in 1923. Miguel set out to revitalize its winemaking tradition, a tradition that originated in the XIVth century when the Carmelite monks, who lived in the monastery annexed to the castle, produced an excellent wine.

This is how Castillo Perelada was born, in the heart of the Empordà region, which is located in the north-eastern corner of Spain, on a land of privileged geo-climatic conditions, thanks to the proximity of the Mediterranean Sea and the extraordinary diversity of its soil.

Today, Javier Suqué Mateu, grandson of the founder, keeps alive a spirit that brings together tradition and modernity - including a Casino; not quite what you'd expect to find in the castle.

WINE GEEKS | GLORIOUS SPAIN

Relative to other wine making regions, Spain is host to some of the most diverse and downright interesting environments, where pushing against the extreme is normality. Be it the often violent Atlantic sea, the generously warm summers along the Mediterranean cost, or the scorching hot summers in the heart of the Iberian Peninsula, early Spanish pioneers had to innovate and adapt their methods in the vineyard and winemaking process to not just defend against these extremes, but to capitalise on it. It is these adaptive techniques and numerous environmental permutations, that have led to our love affair with this great, often overlooked, wine producing country.

To help simplify this country for the everyday wine enthusiast, we often refer to Spain, in six regions: Green Spain, Upper Ebro, Central Spain, Meseta, Mediterranean Coast, and Andalucia. Tonight’s selection will look at white and red wines, across four of these regions.

Castillo Perelada Gran Claustro 2013 (DO Penedes), Pazo De Barrantes Albarino 2015 (DO Rias Baixas), Marques de Murrieta Capellania 2014 (DOCa Rioja), Estones Unic PX 2015 (DO Terra Alta), Quinta Sardonia 2011 (Castilla y leon VT), Teso la Monja Victorino 2007 (DO Toro), and Bodegas Lavia Monastrell 2005 (DO Bullas).
