NGA WAKA

Established in 1988, Nga Waka is one of Martinborough’s most enduring wine producers—still family owned, and still focused on crafting elegant, structured wines that speak clearly of place. The name comes from Nga Waka a Kupe (The Canoes of Kupe), a reference to the three distinctive hills that rise behind the village, rich in local legend.

Nga Waka owns and manages seven small vineyards around Martinborough, with a strong focus on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay—varieties that thrive in this cool-climate region. A small amount of Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Chenin Blanc and Gamay round out the range, all grown and made with sustainability front of mind.

Now in the hands of Jay Short and Peg Dupey, Nga Waka remains dedicated to quality, restraint and longevity—producing wines that age beautifully and sit confidently among the best of Martinborough.

Paul Mason

Paul Mason brings over 20 years of Martinborough winemaking experience to Nga Waka, where he now leads the charge following the retirement of long-time winemaker Roger Parkinson. Having spent two decades at Martinborough Vineyard, Paul is widely respected for his thoughtful, site-driven approach—producing wines of clarity, balance and depth. With a background in science and a winemaking degree from Lincoln University, Paul’s career has taken him around the world. But it’s the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay of Martinborough that remain closest to his heart. His deep understanding of the region’s terroir and commitment to crafting age-worthy wines make him a perfect fit for Nga Waka’s next chapter.
