Dog Point vineyard is located on the southern side of Marlborough’s Wairau Valley. With its silty clay soil and clay loam soils on the hillside, the land is excellent for viticulture. Dog Point’s Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are sourced from selected parcels, all chosen from older vines and supplemented with younger hillside vines.
Dog Point aim to make “regionally distinctive varietal wines that express the Southern Wairau Valley soils, having both depth and complexity.” The grapes at Dog Point are handpicked and winemakers, James and Ivan, fuse old world philosophies with new world technology in their winemaking approach.
Dog Point Vineyard operate the largest organic Biogro
certified vineyard in New Zealand. Their goal is to
produce premium quality wines using environmentally
friendly and responsible practices. Vine prunings and
winery waste are turned into mulch to create a healthy
organic compost. In spring, the Dog Pointers plant cover
crops such as buckwheat and phacelia between the
vines to encourage beneficial insects for biological control
of insect pests. Biodiversity of the property is a key
agenda, with natives planted around ponds and along
the resident stream to attract indigenous birdlife.
