CRAGGY RANGE

In the fifteen-odd years since it released its first wine, Craggy Range has firmly established itself as one of our national vinous treasures, thanks in no small part to their production, year after year, of consistently brilliant wines. Anthony Rose of the UK's Independent Newspaper put it thus: "If you don't know Craggy Range, get acquainted, because I can't think of another wine company that's managed to roll Bordeaux, Burgundy, Loire and Rhône styles into one harmonious group of wines so successfully." Right from the start, founders Terry Peabody and Kiwi viticulturist Steve Smith MW made the bold decision to pursue a single vineyard winemaking philosophy, to select the best sites in New Zealand, and plant vines suited to that terroir. Under the supervision of Chief Winemaker Matt Stafford, the wines are fastidiously crafted in small batches within two separate high-tech wineries (one for whites and one for reds). The portfolio of single vineyard wines are New World classics, and this single-minded winery is producing some of the finest and best value wines in the world.

About the Winemaker

Winemaker | Matt Stafford

Since graduating from Lincoln University with a BSC majoring in Soil Science and a post-graduate Diploma in Viticulture and Oenology, Chief Winemaker Matt Stafford has travelled extensively throughout the world, working with grapes from a variety of wine regions including France, California, Australia and New Zealand. It was back in 2001 when Matt first discovered Craggy Range and corresponded with Steve Smith MW about the exciting soils that had just been planted, later joining the team in 2006. Matt spends an inordinate amount of time understanding the natural characters in the terroir capturing the essence of the land in a bottle. In the cellar Matt chases complexity and uses a minimal intervention approach, allowing the flavours of the vineyard to flow through producing wines that are a pure expression of their place.

CRAGGY RANGE 2015 PRESTIGE AND FRENCH COUNTERPARTS - WITH MATT STAFFORD

It's time for the annual release of Craggy Range's prestige wines, three of the greatest reds made in New Zealand. Rather than presenting these by themselves or with a back vintage, Chief winemaker Matt Stafford has asked us to select some top wines from France to try alongside. This is a rare opportunity to look at each the stylistic differences between our two countries at a very high level with Matt guiding us through. This will be a fun and probably a very vocal tasting, book early to avoid disappointment.
