DOMAIN ROAD

Specialising in award-winning cool climate wines, Domain Road Vineyard is located in a sheltered sunny valley on the upper terraces of the Bannockburn sub-region of Central Otago. A family-owned winery, it is predominantly planted with five clones of Pinot Noir, the vineyard also has Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and Pinot Gris. Soil types are good quality loam on free-draining schist gravels and 'pipe clay' which was named for the white clay used to make tobacco pipes by the early gold miners.

Sited in the heart of an historic gold mining area, the rammed earth cottage on the vineyard links this heritage with the winegrowing activities of today. Cold winters contrast with long hot summers in Central Otago, and dedicated hands-on care of the vines during each season and through the years allows the harvest of outstanding grapes. Our winemaking reflects the terroir of the vineyard, through traditional, low intervention practices in the winery.

Peter Bartle is one of Central Otago’s most successful and respected winemakers. His no-nonsense, passionate approach to winemaking has led to great success in competitions and tastings around the world.

Peter coaxes the best out of the grapes to create wines with poise, texture and balance.

He has worked in the wine industry for nearly two decades, for such top names as Villa Maria Estate, Joseph Phelps Vineyards in Napa, California, and Forrest Estate in Marlborough. He was lured to Central Otago by the promise of working with acclaimed Pinot Noir wines.
