Marojallia was the first boutique producer in the Médoc, debuted in 1999 by the team behind Saint-Émilion’s Château Valandraud. The name comes from the ancient Roman word for the Margaux region, said to have been coined by the poet, imperial tutor and consulate, Ausonius.
Their methods, unorthodox for the region, initially caused some local consternation, but the quality of their output is undeniably high. Production is tiny at only 450 cases a year, and thus the wines of this estate are extremely difficult to procure. The vineyard area is a mere 4 hectares, planted in 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot.
