Champagne. Just the word evokes visions of, well, some sort of champagne lifestyle, doesn't it. And while most of us can't inhabit that elevated terrain for sustained periods of time, it is quite nice just to pop in and visit every now and then. From atop our effervescent empire, we have noted that there's a lot more to the region of Champagne than one might have previously imagined; and far from being mired in tradition, it is very much a dynamic force and a place on the move. There are many options; from the sleek million-dollar brands to the intriguing independent Grower champagnes, the groundbreaking left-fielders to the aspirational prestige cuvees.

Is small better? The Grower champagnes are certainly very interesting, and the quality is undeniably there. In the end, all of the categories have something to offer. Diversity is a good thing. The big houses, the negociants, have the skills, the resources and the experience to ensure consistency of quality year in, year out. As for the Growers, they are very individual expressions, terroir-focused wines with a great deal of character. If you're looking for something different, they are going to be just the thing.

The sometimes litigious Comite Interprofessionnel du vin de Champagne, tasked with safeguarding the champagne name from the encroaching hordes, has developed a wide-ranging set of regulations around viticultural and winemaking processes. With the French ever the branding geniuses, it's all about maintaining standards and celebrating colourful histories stretching back over generations; nothing has quite the cachet of a bottle from Champagne itself. Those names are famous for a reason.

WHAT'S IN A NAME?

In a world where big corporate ownership is often disparaged, champagne continues to write its own set of rules. Champagne's unique character comes not only from its hallowed terroir, but also from centuries of painstakingly accumulated experience, particularly when it comes to blending. For sheer consistency, the non-vintage expressions from the big players are in a league of their own, and their frequently eye-watering financial resources allow them to stockpile vintage upon vintage in order to create a seamless transition of excellence from one year to the next.

UPCOMING CHAMPAGNE TASTINGS

CHAMPAGNE KRUG | WELLINGTON

It was 170 years ago that Joseph Krug broke with convention to follow his dream. That dream was to produce a Prestige Cuvee as their house style. His experiment worked and to this day Krug is synonymous with excellence and style. Josephs vision was to craete the most generous expression of Champagne every year despite the climatic conditions, he started to build a reserve of wines so that he was not reliant on the weather for a good vintage. From that we now have Krug Grande Cuvee one of the highest expressions of a prestige cuvee. Krug also produce a vintage, a Rose and their famous Clos de Mesnil. We will taste through two Grande Cuvee the 2004 vintage a Clos de Mesnil 2004 and the very fabulous Rose. Only five wines but still an extremely fabulous tasting.

Champagne Salon 2008 Tasting Experience

The mythical Champagne Salon is one of the world's greatest wines. Created by one man, they only make one wine, from one village, one variety, and only ever produced in exceptional vintages. The 2008 is only the 38th vintage to be released since the inaugural 1921. 100% Chardonnay from Les Mesnil-sur-Oger in the heart of the Cote des Blancs, the 2008 is the smallest harvest, and possibly the greatest ever at Salon. Only 8000 Magnums were produced, available to purchase only in the Oenotheque case, along with special late disgorged versions of the 2004, 2006 and 2007. We have special permission to open one just for this event. This is truly a once in a lifetime opportunity to try all four of these wines together. We will also be tasting the stunning new 2012 vintage release from Salon's sister house of Delamotte. Our Fine Wine manager and Salon aficionado, Regan McCaffery, will lead us through the history and stories behind this legendary champagne.
