The first champagne tasting always serves to remind us that Christmas is on its way and there is nothing more festive than a bottle of French Champagne, it is in fact the standby for most celebrations. I find it ironic that NV Champagne that represents the House style is probably by far the most complicated to get right and yet this is the wine that makes us giggle and that we can love to drink with gay abandon. How do you choose the perfect bottle? Whatever you select will be great but the only way to really tell is to taste a range of Champagnes together. The tastings that we did was conducted blind. This removes all preconceptions that you may have based on the label. We tasted Pol Roger, Louis Roederer, Paul Bara, Taittinger, Bollinger, Charles Heidsieck, Pommery, Serge Mathieu and Mumm. We tasted in three flights of three and there was not a bad wine in any of the flights, and when we did a hands up at the end there were votes for all the wines. However, there can only be one winner and that was Charles Heidsieck, followed closely by the ever-humble Mumm Grand Cordon and third equal was Taittinger and Pol Roger. This is by no means a judgement, in fact this is just what we found on the night.
