Well it's about time that our closest wine region, The Great Wairarapa got together and started presenting themselves as a group, this is hopefully the first of many such tastings that they will be doing. Saying they had a lot to offer is nowhere near praiseworthy enough. It was an absolute treat of a night with 19 wineries turning up to show us what is going on over the hill.
We had some of the bigger players that we are familiar with such as Palliser, Martinborough Vineyards, Ata Rangi and Escarpment, but it was a golden opportunity to try some of the smaller producers that we had never tried. To say there was not a bad wine in the mix seems a stretch, but it is true.
Talking through the wines with everybody that was there had the same result, while some preferred some wines to others, you would be happy with any of them! Some of the wines that I tried for the first time that spoke to me were: the three wines from Alexander Road Rose, Dusty Road Pinot Noir and their Pinot Noir. The Hamden Estate also had some lovely wines, their Rose one of my picks of the night - extremely drinkable and a bargain to boot. The Chardonnay award had Martinborough Vineyards and Nga Waka battling it out for first place. As far as Pinot Noir goes, we were spoilt for choice, and I wouldn't pick one winner. I think to sum up we can safely say that all wines were winners on the day.
