From start to finish this tasting was great, if I had to think of a one-word descriptor for the wines that Paul makes it would be polished. Every wine we tasted had a charm of their own. We were lucky enough to not only taste through the range, but Paul also bought over two bottles of library stock. This was an opportunity for us to compare the current vintages with something a little older.
We started with the Manu Riesling 2017, this wine had the perfect balance of fruit and acid. The two Sauvignon Blancs were also great, the Te Tera was pungent and had capsicum notes and was a perfect match for hot smoked salmon. The Home Block Sauvignon, was everything that the Te Tera was, but with edges smoothed out partially due to a portion being barrel fermented, it was balanced and creamy. The Home Block Chardonnay has always been a favourite and the 2016 was no exception, another great wine, still quite tight but clean and focussed. We moved to the Pinots and started with the Te Tera 2016, to my mind this is one of the best value Pinot Noirs on the market. It is a steal at $24.99. The Martinborough Pinot Noir 2015 had great structure this was a wine built for cellaring and although lovely to drink now would reward with patience. We then had the Marie Zelie 2013 and exceptional does not begin to describe how good this is, as it opened up in the glass it was giving more and more.
