The Khyber Pass Malt Club kicked off with a bang as Pernod Ricard's Scotch Whisky ambassador David Wallace took us through a beautiful range of Glenlivet's single malt offerings. Beginning with the Founders Reserve and the history of The Glenlivet distillery, the whiskies got older and more complex as we moved along. Next up was the 15 year old, matured in new French Limousin oak casks. The smoothness and elegance all that time in oak has on the whisky was very apparent. Moving on to the 18 year old, we were increasing the alcohol percentage as well as the time in casks leading to a whisky full of richness and nuance. We were then treated to two selections from The Glenlivet's Nadurra range - cask strength whiskies aged in American Oak and first-fill Oloroso Sherry casks. The aromas and flavors experienced on these two were quite interesting with vanilla, tropical fruits, and banana from the American Oak and heaps of raisins, cinnamon, and chocolate from the Oloroso. Finally David treated us all to the crown jewel: The Glenlivet 25 year old. This was sublime. It goes to show that patience really pays off when it comes to aging Scotch whisky.
