We had a fantastic tasting on Tuesday night hosted by Eduardo de Solminihac from Vina Aquitania in Chile. This is a joint venture which brings France and Chile together. The story starts in 1984 when Bruno Prats (of Cos d'Estournel fame) and the late Paul Pontaillier (Margaux) started looking for top terroir in the historic centre of Chile. They searched for 5yrs until meeting Felipe de Solminihac (Eduardo's father), a Chilean winemaker of French origin, who lead them to the site they own today.
The vineyard is located right in the heart of the Maipo Valley. They are so much in the centre, that the city of Santiago has now come up to them and surrounded them. In 2002, a fourth partner joined the founders, Ghislain de Montgolfier of Bollinger. On the label of the wines, you'll find signatures of all four.
These are exceptional wines, more restrained that the stereotypical style from the region. All of the reds are extremely elegant. We finished the tasting with two white wines from the Sol de Sol range (Sol meaning Sun in Spanish and Earth in French).
