The Khyber Pass Wine Club kicked off to a great start with Akarua's winemaker Andrew Keenleyside taking a break from the bitter cold of the South Island to walk us through his range of Central Otago bubbles, whites, and reds. Starting with the Brut NV and Rose Methode Champenoise, we learned what steps Akarua takes to ensure their sparkling wines can stand up to the quality set by the originators in France. We sampled the Vintage Brut as well before moving on to their aromatic whites and ice wine. Finally we were given the opportunity to taste the latest vintage of their Bannockburn Pinot Noir next to their flagship wine - The Siren. As a special treat, he brought up some aged wines no longer available for sale to give us an idea of how Akarua's Pinot Noir can develop over time. The intimate setting of the tasting made it possible for Andrew to answer any questions we had for him and everyone left with a better understanding of how Akarua does what it does, year in and year out.
