There is no tasting prettier than an Alsace tasting, the wines from this region have exceptional aromas and great palate weight. I chose three producers for this tasting with an emphasis on the Josmeyer wines.
Alsace is an interesting area in that being so close to the German border and even in German hands over the centuries the wines have very Germanic names an indeed when you look at the architecture you would swear you were in a German village. The wines themselves are a combination of both countries influence.
I started with Rieslings as they tend to be very dry from this region, in saying that there is still a fabulous fruit presence, but they are linear and focussed and precise. These wines are built to age, and the Louis Sipp Ribeauville de Kirchberg Grand Cru 2010 while still relatively young would be a worthy addition to any self-respecting cellar.
The Pinot Gris flight which included three Grand Cru wines was exceptional. We started with the Gisselbrecht Frankstein 2013, it was a supremely rich and elegant wine with a smoky exotic flavour. Josmeyer have holding in both Hengst and Brand and we tried the Brand 2010 and the Hengst 2007. These are both worth looking at if for no other reason their ageability. The 2007 was my wine of the night and was just packed with stone fruits, orange peel yet there was a mineral edge. Every time I went back to it there was something different presenting itself in the glass. The 2010 Josmeyer was again a knockout wine and with room to grow. This was a fascinating look at both the aging ability and the different sites as well.
We then finished up a Josmeyer Brand Gewürztraminer 2008. I have tried this wine a couple of years ago, so I was interested to see how it was faring. It was phenomenal still fresh with every imaginary Gewurztraminer descriptor in the book. I can use one word... gorgeous. The Gisselbrecht Vendage Tardive was as expected sweeter but sumptuous and hedonistic.
