Taking advantage of the high caliber of experts that Christchurch's bi-annual whisky festival Dramfest 2018 attracts to our shores we coaxed the Whiskey Warrior (yes there's an 'E', he's Irish!) Martin Lynch over the Waitemata Harbour to our Devonport store for a Monday Night Malt Club.
This tasting truly offered something special, with an unique opportunity to try three of the four 'Revival' series Single Malts alongside both Series 1 and Series 2 Brabazon Bottlings.
The 'Revival' series represents the literal revival of Dublin Whiskey, with the opening of the Teeling Distillery in 2015, the first in over 125 years! Aged Single Malts, with wonderful cask finishings, these are rare malts, limited in number and comparisons.
We started our tasting with the Volume 2 Revival, 13 Years of Age with 12 months in Calvados casks. This was pronounced apple on both the nose and palate with a sweet caramel undertone and a spicy finish.
Next was Volume 3 Revival, 14 Years of Age with 12 months in Pineau des Charentes casks, a French aperitif fortified wine. Offering a palate filled with rich dried fruit and toffee, this whiskey finish with a touch of dark chocolate.
Our third dram of the evening, the most recent release in the Revival series, Volume 4 had only arrived into New Zealand days earlier! Aged 15 years, with 12 months in ex-Muscat casks this was my pick of the evening. Floral and fruity, this whiskey offered up peach, pineapple, reminiscent of whiskey spiced fruit salad.
Next we moved to the Brabazon bottlings, a finer look at the affects of maturation in fortified wines. Series 1 is exclusively aged in Sherry, a combination of Olorosso and Pedro Ximenez, creating a rich, and rounded malt with dried fruit, nuts and marzipan. Series 2 highlights port, combining the effects of Tawny, Ruby and White Port casks. This malt is ripe fruit, toffee and nuts with a hint of spice to finish.
