WHEADON'S GIN

“On my father’s side of the family, the roots are very firmly in Guernsey. My Nana, Olive Wheadon (née Best), and my Poppa, Ernest Wheadon, were both born in Guernsey. They both travelled via different routes to New Zealand and were married here. My father is the youngest of their five boys, who were raised in Matamata. I have visited Guernsey many times and was fortunate to visit Guernsey with my Nana 24 years ago, a very special time. Luke Wheadon (proprietor of Wheadon’s Gin) and I share a great, great, great grandfather, Edward Wheadon. The Gin is made at Bella Luce, a property I enjoyed visiting with my Nana. What’s more, the Gin is excellent. When I learnt Luke was distilling on the Island, I was naturally interested; the quality then led us to import Wheadon’s Gin to New Zealand” Liz Wheadon – General Manager, Glengarry Wines

There is a great deal of Guernsey in Wheadon’s Gin. The Wheadon family have been involved in the production and distribution of fine alcohol on Guernsey for over a hundred years and it is this heritage, combined with our island’s maritime environment, that is the inspiration behind Wheadon’s Gin. Produced in traditional copper stills in the atmospheric cellar lounge of the Bella Luce Hotel in St Martins, proprietor Luke Wheadon uses rock samphire foraged from the nearby cliffs and other carefully sourced botanicals to create perfectly balanced artisanal gins in very small batches.

Where is Guernsey? Guernsey is the second largest of the Channel Islands, sitting west of Normandy, France. The Bailiwick of Guernsey brings together the islands of Alderney, Sark, Herm, Jethou. Guernsey’s capital is Saint Peter Port. Guernsey is a self-governing dependent of the British Crown, part of the British Islands, which the United Kingdom is also a member.
