PETANE WINES

Petane Wines is a boutique vineyard situated in Esk Valley, Hawke's Bay dedicated to the production of dry-farmed, handmade, single-vineyard wines. Esk Valley enjoys hot dry summer days with cooling sea breezes in the late afternoon. This natural thermostat allows for gradual sugar accumulation and slow acid reduction giving natural berry ripeness, sublime flavour profiles and fine structure and balance to our wine. This maritime climate is ideal for the varieties we grow - Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer, Chardonnay and Viognier.Our vines are dry-farmed on deep alluvial river sands and stone, left behind by the Esk River. This free draining soil allows the vine roots to reach deep into the earth helping us to achieve full flavoured and true to variety wine styles.We selectively hand-pick the grape bunches so only the fully-ripe, premium quality fruit is harvested and arrives at the winery intact and in the best possible condition for whole bunch pressing. Petane Wines wines are both premium in quality and unique from vintage to vintage. With a combination of the optimal site and environment, careful rootstock and clone selection and thoughtful vineyard management practices, we work with nature to achieve well balanced, interesting wine that reflects the site and the vintage.

Philip Barber

Our wines are crafted by Philip Barber, a second-generation viticulturist whose heritage has led him to believe that outstanding wine begins with outstanding fruit. As such he is dedicated to the entire wine growing process - from the site selection and planting of the vines to the making and finishing of the wine. While Philip's interest in wine was sparked by growing up on the home vineyard situated in Huapai, just outside of Auckland, the journey has taken him around the world, including vintages in South Australia, California and the Mosel Valley in Germany. After an extensive search for a vineyard site throughout the North Island's east coast he found a gem of a property in Esk Valley and Petane Station was born.
