Wedged between the formidable Andes and the vast Pacific Ocean, the long and slender Chile possesses a viticultural history dating back to the wine-quaffing conquistadors. Here, winemaking has experienced something of a renaissance in recent decades; like its Argentinean neighbour, Chile does good value entry-level wine very well, but it has, today, also managed to join the exalted ranks of the top-tier producers.

Chile’s largest wine producer, Concha y Toro was established around 130 years ago, their Carménère expressions some of the finest available. They do all parts of the market well, and here we single out their exceptional sub-$10 wines. Amazes us how they can get this sort of quality into a bottle, ship it all the way to New Zealand and still manage to charge such a lowly price.
