VEGA SICILIA MASTERCLASS
Do not miss this very special tasting. Few wineries have a history as distinguished as that of Vega Sicilia. Founded in the 1860’s in Ribera del Duero, its top cuvée ÚNICO was the first great wine of Spain, with an almost unlimited cellaring potential. Until recent decades it was the only Spanish wine collected and coveted throughout the world.
We will be starting with three vintages of Vega Sicilia ALION - 2014 / 2011 / 2007. Their second project in Ribera del Duero, ALION is the most modern wine of the family, made from 100% Tinto Fino, meant to drink 'early' within 15-20 years.
Then three vintages of their true second wine Vega Sicilia VALBUENA 5° - 2013/2012/2010. This gives the most pure fruit expression, with an ageing process, from barrel to bottle, which lasts five years and gives its name: Valbuena 5° (5th).
Next up their flagship, Vega Sicilia ÚNICO 2006. The wine itself is iconic: a transporting blend of great elegance and power that is aged in wood and bottle for an average of ten years before release, but which can easily cellar for at least another forty. The 2006 is the stunning current release, held back behind the 2007 and 2008 because it needed more time.
Finally we will finish with an incredibly rare and unusual wine, a red with no vintage, the Vega Sicilia ÚNICO RESERVA ESPECIAL. It has a maturing process that is possibly the worlds longest, this 2016 release a blend of three older ÚNICOs, the 1996, 1998 and 2002. This has the most personality, not only boasting ÚNICOs complexity, but also magnifying it through several great vintages, to offer an immense aromatic range and pure elegance, timelessly floating through the magic of a legend.
