CORTON CHARLEMAGNE | GRAND CRU CHARDONNAY | WELLINGTON

Corton-Charlemagne is one of the most prestigious Grand Cru vineyards in Burgundy, and produces some of the world’s finest Chardonnay. The name conjures up the pomp and circumstance from a bygone era, the Roman Emperor Charlemagne himself was said to have ordered the planting of the first white varieties on the famed hillside around 775 AD. The hill of Corton is a large outcrop of limestone, the top of which is still covered in dense forest. The wines have been described as “the most sumptuous of all white Burgundies” and are extremely long lived. Tonight we have two amazing producers, and we will be tasting all Grand Cru wines. Beginning with Domain Jean Chartron - Corton Charlemagne 2018, 2017, and 2015. Chartron is one of the top growers in the village of Puligny-Montrachet, but they also own a tiny plot on this hillside measuring just 856 square meters! Our second wine is the most famous of all from the site, Bonneau du Martray. The Domaine is dedicated to only making two Grand cru wines, nothing else. Their white is described by Clive Coates as “one of the very greatest in all Burgundy”. They also have the largest holdings of the vineyard at 9.5 hectares, which they have tended to since the French revolution. We will be tasting their Corton Charlemagne 2018, 2017, 2016 and finishing with the 2000 vintage, shipped direct from the Domaine for this event. Places for this will be strictly limited so book without delay.
