As Bordeaux specialists, each year when the latest vintage of En Primeur arrives, we like to taste the best of the best. The 1st Growths are amongst the finest red wines in the world, and have held this position for hundreds of years. Embark on the vinous journey of a lifetime, as we taste our way through over $15k worth of the 2017 vintage, including two incredibly rare bottles this year.

We start this year with one of the greatest and most rarest white wines in the world, Chateau Haut-Brion Blanc. This is far and away the finest dry white of Bordeaux, and is very rarely seen, much less tasted. There are usually only 6 bottles allocated to New Zealand. We will then be drinking four of the five famed ‘First Growths’ from the 1855 classification; Chateau Lafite Rothschild, Chateau Mouton Rothschild, Chateau Haut-Brion, and Chateau Margaux. These Cabernet dominant wines have been the favoured wines of Royalty for centuries. Thomas Jefferson famously visited and placed the first orders for the United States in 1787. From the Right Bank we also have the legendary Chateau Cheval Blanc, holder of the highest rank of Premier Grand Cru Classe (A) in Saint Emilion. Finally we finish with a wine that every Bordeaux lover has lusted over, but few have ever tasted due to its stratospheric price of around $5,000 a bottle. The mythical Chateau Petrus from Pomerol is one of the most sought after wines in the world, made from 100% Merlot growing on a special plot of rare blue clay soil.
