JULES TAYLOR - WINNER - NZ WINEMAKER OF THE YEAR

In an industry traditionally dominated by men, Jules Taylor is one of New Zealand’s original pioneers putting a female stamp on things, and a genuine breath of fresh air. She has long maintained an ethos of making high quality, affordable wines to be consumed and enjoyed rather than stashed away in cellars. Born and bred in Marlborough, Jules grew up in the time when that region’s Sauvignon Blanc was wowing the world and setting a Kiwi benchmark. Perhaps inevitable, then, that she would end up with a career pursuing that line. Following a postgraduate course in winemaking and viticulture, winemaking OE in Italy and Australia and winemaking duties at a number of high profile Marlborough estates, she took the plunge in 2001 and established Jules Taylor Wines with husband George Elworthy. Led from the front by their superb Sauvignon Blanc, the entire portfolio has since collected many awards. Jules: ‘We source grapes from vineyards in the Wairau and Awatere Valleys; well, not so much vineyards as back corners of vineyards, rises and hollows and bits of vineyards.’ Still family-owned and operated in Marlborough by Jules and George, Jules Taylor Wines is now an internationally recognised wine brand with a global network of loyal fans.

BEN GLOVER - WINNER - 2021 LEADERSHIP AWARD

Zephyr’s name comes from the characteristics of the prevailing winds which is part of the Marlborough region’s unique ripening reason. Owen and Wendy Glover, the pair behind Zephyr Wines, converted their farm in Dillons Point into a vineyard in 1985. They initially planted Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Riesling, and this has been mainly unchanged.

In the early 1990s, Gewurztraminer left a lasting impression on the Glovers. As a result, Zephyr is an aromatic specialist today. Zephyr Wines is Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand accredited.

“Zephyr wines are created with the spirit, passion and values of the Glover family.” – Zephyr Wines

SHERWYN & MARCEL GIESEN - WINNER - 2021 VITICULTURIST AWARD

It's said that a great wine is made in the vineyard, what's for sure is that it's very hard to make even good wine when you start with inferior grapes. Viticulture is far more than growing healthy fruit. Alongside growing fruit that is expressive of the place in which it is grown, there's a collective responsibility to look after the site. Our world is precious, it's the only one we have, through everything we do, we must care for it. These beliefs together with that of custodianship, looking after the land and leaving it for the next generation are fundamental in Viticulture that leads the way. This year's winners of this award are inspiring in their approach to farming their vineyard Bell Hill.
