Burgundy

It is no surprise that the notion of terroir was developed in Burgundy. The complex fragmentation of the vineyards, the nature the varieties that acutely reflect where they are grown, results in terroir being vital to an understanding of the region as a whole. With a myriad of producers cultivating tiny land holdings - some vineyards are just a few rows - Burgundy is frustratingly complex. But this, the most romantic of regions, rewards the persistent; the fragrant, haunting beauty of a great Burgundy is an experience that sticks long in the mind.
